Adam Smith is widely considered the father of economics, but long before he authored The Wealth of Nations (1776) he first published The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759). Smith was a professor of Moral Philosophy, and many of the worlds first economists came from similar backgrounds. Ever since, the case for a free society has rested on the twin pillars of economics and philosophy.
