French Court Okays Labor-Law Change

France's constitutional court Thursday upheld a controversial jobs law that has provoked the largest street protests in decades, putting new pressure on President Jacques Chirac to resolve the crisis that threatens to destabilize his government. The 10-member Constitutional Council ruled that high youth unemployment rates justified the law, which would give workers under age 26 fewer job protections than older employees. The council also said 'different treatment' for young workers was justified because the law was enacted in the interest of improving job opportunities for them. (Washington Post, Friday)
