Defensive Gun Use Is More Than Shooting Bad Guys

James Agresti | Tuesday, February 27, 2018In a New York Times column entitled “How to Reduce Shootings,” Nicholas Kristof writes, “It is true that guns are occasionally used to stop violence. But contrary to what the National Rifle Association suggests, this is rare. One study by the Violence Policy Center found that in 2012 there were 259 justifiable homicides by a private citizen using a firearm.”
That statement grossly misleads by pretending that firearms only stop violence when they are used to kill criminals.

Why Government-Mandated Benefits Are a Bad Deal for Workers

James Agresti | Friday, February 23, 2018Phil Murphy says that employee benefits like sick leave don’t cost anything, but more than half a century of data on employee compensation and productivity shows that such benefits suppress workers’ wages. Federal government agencies that specialize in economics confirm this is the case.
Furthermore, Murphy’s claims are at odds with one of the most basic laws of economics: There is no such thing as a free lunch.

The Goal Is Freedom: Getting Rights Wrong
fee.org > resources > the-goal-is-freedom-getting-rights-wrong
Sheldon Richman | Saturday, July 5, 2008It's the Fourth of July, the day we ought to contemplate and rejoice in Jefferson's radical declaration of the “self-evident” truth that all individuals are equally endowed with “certain unalienable Rights, … among these … Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Alas, the day cannot be one of unmitigated joy since we have again been reminded that the purported protectors of our liberties have little understanding of those rights. We thus live under constant threat from the very people who claim to protect us. As you might guess, I am referring to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Second Amendment case, District of Columbia v. Heller. More . . .A NEW article by Sheldon Richman

The Goal Is Freedom: Inequality Matters
fee.org > resources > the-goal-is-freedom-inequality-matters
Sheldon Richman | Friday, February 2, 2007In the controversy now raging over whether income inequality in America is growing a lot or a little, some pro-market people say it doesn’t much matter. This attitude is unjustified, not to mention harmful to the cause of individual freedom because it misses the bigger picture. More . . .

Sheldon Richman | Friday, October 20, 2006The Nobel Peace Prize this year went to a different sort of activist. Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi economics professor and his Grameen Bank won the prize for pioneering the concept of microcredit, small loans made to poor producers who because they lack collateral can't get conventional bank loans. “Lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty,” the Nobel committee said. “Microcredit is one such means. Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights.” More . . .A NEW article by Sheldon Richman

Amelia Irvine | Wednesday, September 20, 2017Every day, Google is used for billions of searches, making it the most popular search engine on earth.
