China Faces Competition from Lower-Cost Nations
fee.org > resources > china-faces-competition-from-lower-cost-nations
FEE.org Web Bot | Tuesday, August 26, 2008“If Americans watching the Beijing Games were stunned by China's changing economy, wait until they see price tags on Chinese-made goods this Christmas and beyond. What's bad news for consumers may be good news, experts say, for humanity: China is losing its distinction as the world champion of cheap manufacturing. With pressures building against sweatshops and pollution in China, however, 'Indonesia and Vietnam are just waiting to take their turns,' said Chris Kuehl of the Kansas City business consultant Armada Corporate Intelligence.” (Kansas City Star, Tuesday)
It's a global economy.

Was the Constitution Really Meant to Constrain the Government?
fee.org > resources > was-the-constitution-really-meant-to-constrain-the-government
Sheldon Richman | Friday, August 8, 2008There's no shortcut to a free society. I find myself repeating this because looking for shortcuts is tempting, and thinking is easily overtaken by wishful thinking. A shortcut favored by most advocates of limited government is “restoration” of the Constitution. “If only we could get back to the Constitution as it was written,” people say. It's a sincere wish, but as a path to a free society, it's riddled with potholes. Not that I don't want the Constitution interpreted in the most restrictive way in order to prevent violations of liberty. Of course I do. The problem is how we can get there from here. Taxation as Vandalism
fee.org > resources > taxation-as-vandalism
David Veksler | Thursday, August 7, 2008Imagine a small town with only a few small businesses. The best, most prosperous business is the general store, which sells citizens many of their daily necessities. Just across the street is a shop that sells and installs windows. Unlike the general store, the window shop is not doing well at all. The town is policed by one sheriff, an idealistic man who believes that it is not only his right, but his duty, to do what is best for his community to ensure the safety and happiness of all its residents to the best of his ability. So he puts a brick through each of the general store’s windows. More . . .

Government Concedes Border Fence Will Be Burden
fee.org > resources > government-concedes-border-fence-will-be-burden
FEE.org Web Bot | Wednesday, July 16, 2008The U.S.-Mexico border fence will make life harder on some South Texas farmers, damage valuable wildlife habitat, impair views and generally become an obstacle to border life, the Department of Homeland Security acknowledged in an environmental study of the fence's impact. For the people of the Rio Grande Valley, the federal government said in the recent study that there are serious trade-offs for 70 miles of fence segments that will help Border Patrol control illegal immigration and smuggling from Mexico. But it added that residents will benefit from increased security against 'illegal cross-border activity.' (USA Today, Wednesday)
The government, not free individuals, will decide the tradeoffs.

Getting Rights Wrong
fee.org > articles > getting-rights-wrong
Sheldon Richman | Saturday, July 5, 2008It's the Fourth of July, the day we ought to contemplate and rejoice in Jefferson's radical declaration of the “self-evident” truth that all individuals are equally endowed with “certain unalienable Rights, … among these … Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Alas, the day cannot be one of unmitigated joy since we have again been reminded that the purported protectors of our liberties have little understanding of those rights. We thus live under constant threat from the very people who claim to protect us. As you might guess, I am referring to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Second Amendment case, District of Columbia v. Heller. More . . .
