Jon Miltimore | Thursday, November 21, 2019“Lazy” millennials and “self-absorbed” Gen Zers will soon be asked to cough up trillions to cover the retirements of the boomers who mercilessly mock them, all to fund a program most millennials worry will not even exist by the time they reach retirement.

Sheldon Richman | Friday, October 10, 2008What might be even more distressing than the current buildup of the corporate state in response to the supposed economic crisis is the way some self-styled advocates of the free market are willing to cast aside the economic theory they claimed to embrace. The Constitution or Liberty
fee.org > resources > the-constitution-or-liberty
Sheldon Richman | Friday, December 7, 2007If the foundation of our case for liberty is nothing more than the Constitution — rather than natural-law justice — we will continue to be trumped by our opponents. After all, the Constitution was in effect all during the time the national government expanded and liberty shrank. As Lysander Spooner wrote, the Constitution “has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it.” Liberty's champions have to come to terms with that logic. The Goal Is Freedom: Made Everywhere

Sheldon Richman | Friday, February 23, 2007The Commerce Department (whose idea was that?) said last week that 2006 was another record year for the U.S. “trade deficit.” The value of imports beat the value of exports by $764 billion. That makes five record years in a row. China's trade surplus with us hit $233 billion. Ordinarily, I would ignore this nonstory because, as Adam Smith wisely said, “Nothing . . . can be more absurd than this whole doctrine of the balance of trade.” And how many times must it be pointed out that the current-account deficit is a mirror image of the capital-account surplus? But in thinking about the announcement and the Smith quote, I've come away with a new appreciation of what the old Scotsman was saying. Concern about imports and exports really is ridiculous. Arthur Foulkes | Saturday, April 1, 2006National emergencies, wars, natural disasters—all these things tend to bring about expanded government power.1 Hurricane Katrina was no exception. In addition to promising to spend billions of dollars of other people’s money allegedly to “rebuild” New Orleans and other stricken areas, politicians have been equally generous with other people’s gasoline supplies. In many states, anyone […] -

Jon Miltimore | Thursday, February 8, 2024The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals compared the FBI’s actions to Revolutionary War practices of the British, who would search and seize the property of colonials without probable cause.
A closer look at the story reveals the judges were not engaging in hyperbole.

Peter Jacobsen | Wednesday, December 28, 2022Generating noise to confound expectations isn’t the only element associated with good comedy, but it’s essential, and it’s what Norm excelled at. Or, to quote Norm, “I feel comedy is surprise, right? So that’s the funniest thing—something they don’t expect.”
