California Lawmakers Propose State Savings Accounts for Babies


In a bipartisan effort, two state senators Wednesday introduced a bill to create a $500 savings account for every newborn Californian. While expensive — $283 million to give $500 to each the state's roughly 160,000 annual newborns — supporters said it was worth the investment.(San Francisco Chronicle, Wednesday)
